This term we settled back into school after the summer break.
This term we have enjoyed many different activities in the subject areas.
In our local history we’ve been learning about the placenames in Monageer and the original meaning behind them. The children have also been busy collecting old stories and folklore from around the parish. We have typed up these stories and they will be displayed in the corridor.
We were learning about the eco village of Cloughjordan Co. Tipperary in Geography. We decided to make our own Eco village and we have it on display in our class. Our village has highly insulated homes, wind turbines, solar panels, buses, bikes, a community farm and a community heating system. We decided to name it Tuaim Glas – Which means the Green Mound.
We watched a webinar on mindfulness and rounded off the activity by making playdough roses. The results were impressive! We enjoyed it so much that we are keeping a stash of playdough in the classroom for use in other lesson. Supposedly, it helps concentration!
Recently we’ve been developing our social and emotional skills through play. We’ve played snakes and ladders and 5 second rule board games. We were pleasantly surprised when teacher wheeled in the sand tray and let us play with the sand… We were even allowed to add water! We have also listened to stories in class and the story that caught our attention most so far was the story of the Marie Celeste. We were using the questioning strategy throughout to try to figure out what had happened the crew on this ship! In the end we didn’t find out, but we had many theories as to what may have happened.
For Hallowe’en we have learned “The Witches Spell” from Shakespeare’s Macbeth which we performed at assembly.
We also made dancing skeletons and made spider webs from black sacks. A cheaper alternative to buying decorations!
On the day of the holidays, we all dressed up. We had a fun day! We especially enjoyed putting on a puppet show using the puppets we made earlier in the term.
