History of the School

History of Monageer NS

Monageer NS celebrated its centenary in 2014. The amalgamation of two schools Tinnacross and Coolgarrow in 1914 saw the birth of a new school in the heart of the parish. It began with two classrooms, two staff members and 100 pupils and has grown to 11 staff and 135 pupils presently.

In 1958 the school moved across the road to its present site having three classrooms.

In 1981 there were 3 class teachers and between 1981 and 2013 the school developed into a five mainstream teacher school, with a Learning Support teacher and a shared Resource teacher. Also on the staff are a Special Needs Assistant and an invaluable school Secretary.

In 2008 a “State of the Art” extension was opened by the then Minister of Education Mary Hanafin and Bishop of Ferns Denis Brennan. A new building with 5 new classrooms was added and the original 3 classrooms built in 1958 were used as a Resource room, an All-purpose room – (this is now a well-stocked and well used and loved Library) and a Staff room.

A sixth classroom and a new resource room were added in in 2013, as the school was sanctioned with a full time Resource teaching position and to cater for growing numbers.

Although the building has changed hugely, the ethos of the school has always remained the same. It has remained a local, friendly school, where the needs of the pupils are always put first.
